I’m often asked where I come from and how I ended up in Shetland. Truthfully, living here wasn’t something I dreamed about—it was more of a happy accident, a twist of fate that changed my life in ways I could never have imagined.
Shetland has a way of captivating people with its rugged landscapes, fresh air, big open skies, vibrant culture, and wonderful community, and I’ve been no exception. But, as with anywhere, life here comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. After 20 years of calling these islands home, I’ve come to deeply appreciate not just the beauty of the place but the lessons it has taught me.
From my first visit in 1999 to founding Shetland Wool Adventures and 60 North Publishing, my journey has been one of serendipity, growth, and discovery. I’d love to share the story of how these islands became my home and shaped the life I lead today.
A Journey That Began with a School Trip
My Shetland story began with a high school exchange trip. Growing up in the Czech Republic, I couldn’t have imagined how much Shetland would capture my heart. I felt welcome from the moment I arrived, as though I was already part of the islands’ unique and close-knit family. My host family introduced me to Shetland’s rugged beauty on long coastal hikes, leaving me in awe of its breathtaking landscapes and generous spirit. I truly fell in love with the place and I knew I had to return one day.
Later, after spending a couple of summers working at a local hotel, I fell in love with a local—and knew this was where I was meant to be. Shetland’s wide-open spaces and fresh, heady air were intoxicating, though the long winters tested my resilience. Life here isn’t for everyone, but these islands have a way of rooting themselves deeply in your soul.
I was especially drawn to Shetland’s rich culture, a fascinating blend of Scottish and Scandinavian traditions. It felt like a magnet pulling me back time and time again. So, in 2004 when I graduated from university, I took the plunge. With no experience or capital—just determination and a willingness to learn and work hard—I made Shetland my permanent home. The transition wasn’t easy, but every challenge taught me valuable lessons and built my confidence.
Finding My Place and Building a Life
Looking back, I feel immense pride in how far I’ve come. The fear of not being “good enough” has been replaced by a deep sense of accomplishment. I’ve learned to approach life with courage and to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Now, as I step into the next phase, I’m learning to slow down—to savour the process, create with intention, and appreciate the journey rather than always rushing to the next goal.
The Birth of Shetland Wool Adventures and 60 North Publishing
Eight years ago, I took another leap and founded Shetland Wool Adventures. It began as a passion project alongside my full-time job with a local heritage organisation. For two years, I balanced both roles, pouring countless hours into every detail of the tours. I planned, organised, baked cakes, arranged flowers, packed workshop materials, and worked 15-hour days—all while dreaming of what this endeavour could become.
Eventually, I decided to focus on the business full-time, and it’s been an incredible journey. What started as a one-woman operation has grown into a thriving enterprise with a dedicated team I can trust and rely on. Sharing the workload has allowed me to focus on the aspects I love most—connecting with people and showcasing the magic of Shetland.
When the pandemic hit, however, everything changed. With tours on hold, I needed to pivot quickly to keep the business afloat. That’s how 60 North Publishing was born—a response to a challenging moment that became a creative and rewarding new direction. Almost overnight, I had to develop a new venture, and it’s been amazing to see how it has grown alongside Shetland Wool Adventures.
Running these tours and now the publishing business has been a labour of love. My passion for Shetland—its people, landscapes, and traditions—fuels me every day. Through Shetland Wool Adventures and 60 North Publishing, I hope to inspire others to fall in love with this place just as I did all those years ago.
Gratitude and Looking Ahead
To everyone who has been part of this journey: thank you. Your support and enthusiasm have made these 20 years unforgettable. Here’s to continuing the adventure, creating lasting memories, and embracing all the opportunities yet to come.
As this year comes to an end and 2025 approaches, I wish you from the bottom of my heart the courage to follow your dreams, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the joy of discovering what truly matters to you. May the new year bring inspiration and fulfilment in all that you do.

I only visited Shetland (for the first time) a few years ago, on the way to a residency in Fair Isle. I arrived on a glorious “red sky at morning, shepherds take warning” day. Two hours later it was blowing a hoolie, and my boots were full of water but I was in love with the place and wishing we (Shetland and I) had met forty years ago. I would have stayed. That was the day I popped into your office and bought some wool from Donna so that I could fabricate a hat.
Your venture into publishing was an absolute gift during the plague, thank you. If there’s any chance you’d ever include a story in there from an outsider, do let me know. It would be a delight to be included in those pages.
Wishing you and yours a happy and peaceful 2025.
my long-time friend and i plus 4 friends from our local weavers guild are very much looking forward to sharing Shetland with you on our September tour!
