Blue Skies, Quiet Paths

Returning to a favourite place, soaking up the sunshine, and enjoying the simple pleasures of a Shetland midsummer day.

The glorious weather has stayed with us all weekend, and today we returned to one of my favourite places in Shetland: Muckle Roe. It had been a while since our last visit, and it felt so good to be back.

We walked to the Hams of Roe, following a familiar path through a beautiful landscape of heather-covered hills and blue skies, towards the rugged coastline. The light and visibility were wonderful, and the warm air carried that wonderful feeling of a perfect midsummer day in Shetland.

This time, we didn’t do the full circular walk. Instead, we followed the path into the Hams and returned the same way. It makes for a lovely walk that is accessible for most abilities, although there are a few steeper sections along the route.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the circular walk reveals even more of Muckle Roe’s spectacular scenery. What I love about this coastline is its wild character: the sea has carved countless inlets into the shore, along with caves, stacks and hidden corners that invite exploration. On a clear day, the views stretch across to Vementry, and it is easy to lose track of time simply stopping to take it all in.

We were lucky to spot a golden plover, a pair of red-throated divers and an otter, along with countless orchids and many other wildflowers.

Sometimes the best days are the simplest ones: a walk, a picnic in the fresh air, good company, beautiful scenery, and nowhere else to be. A Sunday well spent.
